How Many Moons Does Venus Have?

Rajib Singha
Venus, the second planet from the sun, is known to be the brightest celestial body after Earth's natural satellite, the moon. And we are here to know about the number of moons this planet has.
The planet Venus, the planet of love, the brightest planet of the solar system, surprisingly has no moon. But there is something interesting about this fact. Let us explore some details on this subject.

Why Does Venus Have No Moons?

First, let's talk about the Earth's natural satellite. According to scientists, our moon was formed when an object (not smaller than Mars) collided with the Earth several billion years ago. This collision gave rise to debris, which got splashed into the orbit of the Earth, and finally reformed to be a natural satellite, the one which we see every night.
The speculated reason why Venus has no natural satellites, might be associated with the planet's rotation, which is clockwise, unlike other planets which rotate counterclockwise.
Scientists say that there is a possibility that even the planet Venus may have had impacts with other objects in outer space, and these impacts may have even carved out a moon for the planet. But may be, the natural satellite could not make it far, finally crashing down to the planet's surface.
Another hypothesis states that although the natural satellite did form, it might have drifted to a point that it escaped altogether, never making it back to the planet.
Some experts give the explanation that even if a natural satellite does get formed for Venus, it would be destroyed by the Sun's gravity, if it lies too far away from the planet. On the other hand, as we already know, if the natural satellite lies too close, it would collide with the planet and be ripped to pieces.
To tell you another fact, just like Venus, even Mercury has no moons. Venus may have had moons in the past, but at present, it is for sure that there aren't any. Space is a 'dynamic' piece of entity. It has been changing since the moment it got created, and it will keep up with this process forever.
According to experts, there is a gap of 3.8 cm which is forming between the Earth and its moon every year. It may happen that there would be no moon for our future generations to see. Space is the biggest conundrum, which, no matter how much is solved or explored, still manages to create the element of surprise!
